What's included in our 11+ Courses
11+ Reading and Writing
11+ Mathematics
Problem Solving & Critical Thinking
Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
11+ Reading and Writing
Our English course is designed to familiarise children with the three main components of the English requirements on most entrance examinations:
reading comprehension (written, short answer and multiple choice)
spelling, grammar and vocabulary
writing composition
Our daily lessons will help to strengthen children’s reading stamina and comprehension skills using high-quality texts and a combination of short and long-form responses which are modelled on common 11+ entrance exams. We will also focus on exam techniques and time management skills.
Our writing composition component will provide children with the opportunity to practise the skills required to handle long, structured writing tasks on most 11+ entrance examinations. We will provide detailed, constructive feedback to prepare your child for their examinations.
11+ Mathematics
Our 11+ daily maths lessons will cover topics not regularly covered in primary schools at the level required for most 11+ examinations. Topics include fractions, algebra, probability, shape, measurement and geometry with a focus on worded problems.
In addition, we will address any gaps in basic mathematics knowledge such as number sense and place value in short, timed, focused activities in order to strengthen these essential skills.
Problem Solving & Critical Thinking
Most primary school children are equipped with basic computation and arithmetic skills but are not always given adequate practice to tackle worded problems that require multiple steps and reasoning to solve. Our maths lessons will be primarily structured around worded reasoning problems.
The ability to read a worded problem and break it down into manageable steps and recognise the hidden equations that lie underneath is essential in the 11+ examination. We will teach children the necessary skills to take seemingly complicated problems and rework them into simple equations and logical steps with confidence.
Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
While many schools no longer have a Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning component to their entrance examinations, instead focusing on essential reading comprehension, writing composition and mathematics problem solving, some schools may still require these skills.
Additionally, the logical thinking required to tackle most verbal and non-verbal tasks is a skill that is not always familiar to children and can be a major benefit in all other aspects of the maths and English curricula. Therefore, our 11+ summer intensive course will include a component on verbal and non-verbal reasoning which will provide exposure and opportunity for children to become familiar with, and more confident in these types of questions.
